KEY POINTS in SECURITY and SELF-DEFENSE
KEY POINTS in SECURITY and SELF-DEFENSE
Awareness of your environment is the first step toward personal safety
1. If at all possible, never let the perpetrator / attacker choose the place of engagement
2. Use the environment (or anything) as a weapon.
3. Use Physiological Weapons
Environmental Weapons: * Fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, chairs, benches, trees, furniture, comb, hair brush, lamp, phone,
back-pack, purse car antennae, windshield wiper, belt, pen, pencil, books, coffee, doors, walls, corners, counters, cars, bicycle,
sun light, dirt/sand, shopping cart, wallet – Money, $$$.
Personal weapons:
* Your brain (your mind), hands, fists, fingers, elbows, knees, feet and authoritative voice.
Targets:
* Primary targets: Eyes & groin ( e.g. pepper spray for the eyes )
* Secondary targets: shin, instep, nose, edges of ribs, solarplex & neck
Always follow the NEVER Rules: "NEVER"
1. Allow yourself to be tied up
2. Cooperate – i.e. good to a secondary crime scene
3. Go it alone – use the buddy system!
Ten Points to Bear in Mind:
1. Trust your instincts. If you get a bad feeling about someone or something, listen to your inner voice. Intuition:
2. Practice Target Denial. Don't allow yourself to be put into a situation to become a target.
3. Demonstrate a confident Posture: Most Attackers don't want a hard time.
4. Maintain a stance that is confident and yet non-threatening.
5. Set Strong Verbal boundaries: Be confident and don't give any information that you are not comfortable giving. ( "Stop, leave me alone" )
6. Use the Gap: At least 1 ½ arms lengths – that will give you time to react.
7. Use the "Element of Surprise!" - react immediately
8. S.I.N.G. – Shin, Instep, Nose and Groin.
9. Don't Panic: even if you are knocked down—use your legs and kick
10. Maintain personal boundaries: Don't let anyone make you feel uncomfortable.
